I told you I would write another review at the end of my time on the 404040 fitness plan. (If you missed my blog post on how I embarked on this adventure, you can read it here in Keeping Fit Beyond Forty.) I have to say this is one tricky post to write. Partly because there’s nothing easy about exercising regularly if that’s not your normal. Partly because not only is it a bit of a job writing anything, but because I actually had to take part in this programme myself over 40 days. And partly because I am eating a chocolate biscuit.

The Plan appealed to me because it is specifically tailored for women over forty and you can work on it at home, in your own time, around family life. I didn’t need to loose a huge amount of weight, I just wanted to firm up a few flabby bits around the middle and on my upper arms.

The night before I started the plan I didn’t sleep all that well because I was kept awake by this phrase bumping around in my head: “What on earth have you signed yourself up for?!” I was actually nervous about the commitment I’d made to get fitter.

However, after the first session I realised it really wasn’t as exhausting as I had imagined and in fact was quite fun. I was delighted that I managed to get through it without pulling any muscles or dying in a puddle of my own sweat.

I posted a few updates on social media as I progressed along on Niki Wibrow’s 404040 plan.

At the cool down stage of the 404040 workout I’m always relieved that I made it through!  It’s not an overly strenuous plan thankfully, I’m just a bit of a lazy old bag. Over half way through the 40 days now. Prognosis? I could have worked harder!

I’ve skipped a few days here and there due to various reasons (excuses) but I fully intend to carry on with the exercises long after the 40 days are over. I love how they are specifically targeted at the areas in my body which need strengthening up. I also love the way Niki talks you carefully through each position and is very encouraging.

Today’s core exercises were brutal on the upper arms, I do NOT like my upper arms.  Apparently I’ve inherited the ‘family arms’ but I plan to change that. #404040plan”

Reviewing the 404040 Plan

There are two sides to this review really, the one is all about the product and the other is all about how I got on with the product.

In summary Niki provides you with online links to four workout sessions a week, consisting of a warm up, a core programme and a cool down. I love how she has tailored all her exercises to an over forty year old body so she guides you through every exercise carefully, pointing out how to mind specific joints. She is chatty and friendly in her videos and keeps you going through the hard parts by constantly encouraging and spurring you on. You really need that as you are more than likely doing this programme by yourself at home.

Ideally she recommends you do these on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays. I need to confess here that I was not an ideal participant. I didn’t manage to do four sessions a week so overall I could have tried a bit harder – I had bad excuses like sick kids and school holidays, and poor discipline.

She also gives you a recipe book filled with ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as snacks in between. I liked that her recipes are uncomplicated and contained no gimmicks or strange ingredients. I also like that the plan doesn’t mean that you have to cut out whole food groups from your diet. The recipes fit well around family life too.

She also had a private Facebook group which you are invited to join to encourage and support you. Apart from the group she posts regular updates on Twitter and Instagram as well as sends e-mail updates so you never feel abandoned along the way.

The biggest benefit I found was that apart from shaving off a few centimeters, was the boost of well being after every session. I liked how the routines left me feeling not only stronger but delighted with myself for having done them. I plan to continue with them even though I have completed the 40 days.

  1. Liberty, I’ve found it helpful to do my workout first thing in the morning and do it every day. I found when I scheduled it for certain days of the week, it was much harder. Doing it every day, if something happens one day (sick, sick family, appointments, unavoidable “things” of one sort or another), or even more, I still get my workout in at least 4 or 5 times a week. It’s all psychological! 😀 And different “tricks” work on different people.

  2. Well done you! I love your honesty too. I confess, I was due to start the plan, but realised that it just wasn’t going to work with my lifestyle, mainly because I’m lazy, (and also not too well physically!). Thanks for linking up with #TheMMLinky again x

    1. Sorry that you’re not very well. I’m terribly lazy about exercise and only get around to it if I’m motivated by something, so I tend to do better if I’m doing it with friends. I have been going to a ballet class and we are working towards a show (slightly terrified) so that’s a concrete goal for me.

  3. I really admire you for sticking with this Liberty. I think I’ve said before that if you are not someone for whom this is enjoyable, it is really difficult. It’s a real challenge to the mindset and willpower more than anything else. The internal arguing can be huge! As someone in a similar position, I am a complete advocate of finding the exercise that you love. I am also acutely aware that I need to up my game a little and that more often I find food that I love too. This is something I need to start addressing as the weight sure does fly on once you get to the fifties. My payback for being a skinny youngster. Well done and thanks for sharing with #tweensteensbeyond

    1. That’s just the problem isn’t it Nicky, being a skinny youngster makes one very apathetic as it’s been an easy ride up until now. It’s come as a rude shock that I don’t fit into clothes that I’ve had since I was a student. The internal dialogue is generally very negative in my case and that’s why I found this great as I managed to shut the negative voices up for a while and replace them with well being.

  4. Well done for completing the plan. I’m sure this has given you a grounding for a healthier lifestyle.

I lie the idea of one you can do at home as time is limited with four kids. I wonder if there’s one for men over 40!

  5. I started doing the 7 minute workout at the start of the year but then got ill with vertigo and had to stop. Now I am finally getting better and my fitness is terrible! This plan looks great (and I am approaching 40!). Thanks for linking up with #globalblogging

  6. As you know Liberty I have been waiting with baited breath for your feedback on this programme. I am so glad you enjoyed it and got something out of it. Plans you can do at home are definitely the way forward for many reasons. Now you have come this far you have to carry on but in the meantime well done!. #TweensTeensBeyond

  7. Alice Letters to my Daughter

Well done for sticking at it! I think I would have had trouble sleeping before that commitment too! Must have been good to have the blog side of things holding you accountable though. I know I do so much better at things when I’m not just doing them for myself. #BlogCrush

  8. My stupid body has given up on me or I would so be interested in this. I love that it’s aimed at the older woman our bodies do change as we get older! Well done on doing this, you sound very positive about your experience.

I was quite tempted to try this one myself but bottled it so really good to hear a comprehensive review of it #TheMMLinky
