We were recently sent a copy of A Girl’s Guide to Being Awesome by Suzanne Virdee for review purposes and to offer four readers the exciting opportunity to win a copy of their own! This fabulous book is chock full of empowering advice for teenaged girls – because teenage life doesn’t come with a rule book.
Wouldn’t you just love to return to your teen years? Nope, me neither.
Teenaged life is filled with new pressures – your results at school are suddenly and seriously measured, your body goes through mystifying changes, your friendships become inconsistent and tumultuous. The process of meeting your emerging identity can quite frankly be terrifying!
Award-wining TV journalist Suzanne Virdee is passionate about empowering girls from diverse backgrounds and has written this book to support girls in their journey to achieve their dreams.
Our Review of A Girl’s Guide to Being Awesome
This book is beautifully put together – the pages are a nice strong quality for writing notes, the quotes are fun and the illustrations are bright and engaging. A wide range of topics that are relevant to teenaged life are covered and they include: social media, learning, self esteem, identity, friendships, depression, feminism and pornography.
I gave the book to my daughter Rebecca aged 14 to read and here are some of her thoughts about the book:
I like the layout because it isn’t like a regular book and makes it more intriguing. I like the interaction of the author with the readers.
I like the way I am getting educated by the book eg they have a couple of pages for Greta Thunberg and it is educating us on her and her work and what we can do to help.
I like the advice, especially the ones to do with school and exams.
I like the motivational quotes throughout the book.
I like the tips for self confidence because as a young teen in secondary school I feel that people suffer from being self conscious and this helps a lot. She helps me feel more confident in school.
I also like the bit where she gives tips on how to talk to a friend who is dealing with depression or is very upset.
