Keeping Fit Beyond Forty

Once upon a time, in a vast city in a land far far away, there was a young woman who would awaken before the dawn and head off to the great gym where all the other young ones would gather. They would spend an hour jumping up and down and side to side to the rhythm of the latest top 100. They would do this several times a week, before heading off in their cars to their careers and (mostly) self absorbed life styles.

There would be young men in this gym too, not often jumping about like the women, but more commonly performing other strengthening movements on cumbersome pieces of machinery off to one side.

Here is a brief video that is slightly reminiscent of those days: (I wish to warn you, however, there may be some scenes that sensitive viewers would find disturbing).

Now let me ask you, what exactly is wrong about that video above? Besides the obvious dubious hip thrusts and questionable taste in 80’s gym attire? Yes! It’s that all those people at that gym are ALREADY FIT and not a single person over the age of 29! In actual fact, that age group usually looks great with little effort anyway. It’s when you start to advance in years, and girth, that exercise becomes slightly more urgent in order to look half decent.

So, back to our wee tale.

Fast forward a number of years and one of the maidens has hit her mid forties, she has had four children and has let things go a little around the middle. She no longer likes to leap around the gym until she is dripping with sweat because the footless tights and skimpy leotard no longer cut a becoming profile. In fact, she took a photo this evening and she would forgive you for asking her when her fifth child is due.

This mummy dresses to hide her swell tummy and she tries to pull it in when she’s in public. She thankfully has never had a big struggle with excessive weight gain, but she is sorely lacking energy, strength and stamina. Her upper arms flap in the breeze and she no longer has that youthful trim sprightliness she had all those years ago.

This mummy is me (no prizes for already guessing). I am getting LAZY. No nice way to say it. I do go to an adult ballet class once a week but it’s not enough to counteract the number of years I have lived. No longer am I keen to go to the gym, but I am keen to work out at home where I can wear more comfortable clothing. In fact I sort of already tried to get up with the hubby in the mornings and work out with him. It has been more or less successful, the LESS being ironically more prominent than the MORE, largely due to the fact that I have no idea what I am doing, I needed a plan:

When I came across Niki Wibrow’s 404040 plan this past week, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. I woke up one morning and said I need a plan and then I stumbled across Niki on Facebook and she said “I have the 404040 plan”. Niki has designed a fitness solution especially designed for women like me. Besides improving my stamina, my aim is to build up my core strength and I am hoping that by the time summer comes around, I’ll feel confident about wearing a swimming costume on holiday. 

I have had a look through her recipe booklet and what I really like about her recipes is that they are all exactly the type of food I love and already eat so it should be easy to keep up with. As she says, she is not encouraging you to follow any faddish diets or take any unusual supplements.

  1. that’s my biggest bug bear, everyone at the gym or even in beginner keep fit classes is already fit, I’m 46 and look and feel like a total wally trying to keep up or even join in but I lack motivation doing things on my own #tweensteensbeyond

    1. I am pretty rubbish at sticking to home routines so I’ll have to see how this goes. The thing I noticed this morning as I tried the first session is that Niki is a good motivator, she can tell when you are getting tired even though she can’t see you and she’s constantly providing encouragement. 😀 😀

    1. 😂😂 thanks for the encouragement, I did the second session this morning and actually I’m quite enjoying it. I was worried it would kill me but the exercises are perfect for this age, she’s conscious of how an older body is not the same as a twenty something’s body anymore.

  3. I’m pretty lucky I guess that the gym that I go to has a pretty good amount of people there that wouldn’t be appearing on a fitness magazine cover anytime soon. Now, if I could just get there a bit more often, I’d be better off #TTB

  4. Luckily (or not) I live in an area where people seem to be all older than me. This fact + the horrid weather we’ve had this winter put me in a very depressing mood. I’ve joined my local gym to try to sweat it out. I use cardio machines (bikes, rowing thingies…etc) and attend the classes I choose. To my great surprise I fell in love with the step class. During 45 minutes my brain has to focus to the routine. And it’s good to have your brain focused!!! It is not overly exhausting so I keep enjoying it. My knees remind me the next day that I am 45 though…!

    1. Winter is a very bad time of the year for moods as well as fitness, it’s amazing how the two are so interlinked. I love how this fitness plan is so tailored for older bodies and she is always reminding you to mind your joints etc which is so important at this stage of life. It’s a more gentle workout routine and I haven’t had any negative after effects.

  6. Thought you had snuck into my house when I started reading!! I had a double whammy in that chronic nerve damage in my back returned aged 39…so age, immobility and drugs side effects….aghhh the pounds piled on to a body that had never carried extra weight (even after the kids). I have managed to shed most of the 3 stone, but I do admit that some has been unhealthy due to gut problems, – exercise is a big problem though!!! I try to use my neighbours treadmill and do pilates….so I take my hat off to you and look forward to your progress. Do it for all us forty somethings and knock em dead in that swimsuit!! #MMLinky

    1. I take my hat off to you actually! Fighting age and weight is one thing but quite another when pain and injury are added to the mix. I have always heard Pilates is very good, some of the exercises in this programme are based on it – they are all gentle and doable so not too intimidating. Having said that, I did have a sore bottom yesterday from the leg lifts! Hopefully I’ll stay motivated enough to keep going now!

  7. Sounds like an achievable goal which is half the problem sometimes I think! I’m 30 but weighted myself at my mum’s the other day (we don’t own scales) and I’ve reached my self-imposed ‘amber warning’ weight and am the heaviest I’ve ever been (in my non-pregnant life) so I need to sort myself out before it gets worse!   8. Good luck! I know exactly how you feel, having stumbled into my 40s a while ago. I’ve never been a gym-lover, or even an exercise lover, but I know I need to do something soon before I turn into a big floppy blob 😦 #TheMMLinky

    1. That’s the problem, the blob state is a bit depressing to be in but it’s hard to stay motivated. Some days I think my changing body is inevitable so there’s no point in working so hard to stay fit but then every now and then I catch sight of my newish bulges and don’t like what I see.   9. Liberty, I was drawn to this post when visiting your blog for the first time today. I hope you’ve been progressing with your program since you wrote this some months ago. I used to be one of the already-fit-and-trims at the gym, aerobics classes, etc, because I’ve always exercised and eaten well for my health’s sake. But 40 is a great time to start. Any time is a great time to start. It’s never too late. My husband and I call it “fighting decrepitude”! Thank you Jean, I love that – fighting decreptitude 😀 I haven’t been disciplined enough to keep up with the routines but I have been going to weekly ballet classes and twice weekly rowing sessions so I’m still trying to keep fit. I find that classes keep me more accountable. I’ll take a look at that link, thank you for sharing.
