Self Catering and Historic Charm in the Heart of Oxford UK

Between Christmas and New Year in 2017 we went away to the beautiful city of Oxford in the UK for two nights and stayed in the remarkable Folly Bridge House. Overflowing with historic charm, Folly Bridge House consists of self catering accommodation that can hold groups of up to 14 people. We were a family of ten, consisting of 5 adults and 5 kids aged 8-16.

Folly Bridge House is ideally situated right in the heart of Oxford, across the road from Christ Church Meadow and within easy walking distance of all the main attractions and sites.

If you’re looking to stay in a place filled with historic charm then Folly Bridge House is perfect. This unusual looking building is a redbrick crenellated Victorian tower and is situated on a miniscule island in the middle of the river Thames. The outside is visually stunning and the inside has been lovingly restored and decorated with contemporary art and sculpture from the owners’ own collection.

Ideal for Self catering

The house is spilt over four floors and so we were all accommodated in our own self catering studio apartments on different levels. Five of the studios have their own bathrooms, two of the studios share a wetroom which has a quirky stained glass window which enables you to peek out over the river while you shower.

We stayed in Studio Papaver which has its own little balcony overlooking the Thames. Our room was a good size, nice and warm and the bed gave us a very comfortable night’s sleep. We had a compact kitchenette that was fully stocked with everything we needed for cooking and incuded complemetary tea and coffee.

I loved sitting in the morning with my coffee overlooking the river, or in the evening with my glass of wine, overlooking the lights and spires of romantic Oxford.

One of my sisters and her husband stayed below us in Studio Calendula which is the largest of the apartments. It has its own entrance and a small conservatory attached which is perfect spot for reading a book with a view of the birdlife on the river just outside.

Situated in the Centre of Oxford

Even though Folly Bridge House is situated right in the centre of Oxford, it is quiet as it’s situated set back from the road behind another building and surrounded by water. The whole place was absolutely spotless and is constantly being upgraded and lovingly restored.

The central location of this property is one of the real benefits of staying here. We began our day by walking across Christ Church meadow and into town to visit some of the historic colleges, the Bodleian Library, and the Radcliffe Camera.

We spent a few hours being fascinated by the shrunken heads, dinosaurs, totem poles and other archaeological wonders of the Pitt Rivers Museum.

After spending a whole day exploring Oxford, it was such a relief to have only a short walk back home to the Folly Bridge House.

Extremely handy is the Tesco just a block away if you’d like to pop in for some self catering supplies. There are numerous restaurants in the area too, including one right next door that offers discounts and takeaways to residents of Folly Bridge House.

Self Catering Facilities at Folly Bridge House

Folly Bridge House is surrounded by and filled with art and beautiful surprises
  • 7 self contained self catering studio apartments
  • Fully equipped kitchenettes with a microwave oven, kettle and hob
  • Limited off street parking
  • River views from all studios
  • Flat screen TV
  • Bed linen
  • En-suite bathrooms in five of the studios
  • Wifi

The en-suite bathrooms are self contained pods so they are small and only accommodate one person at a time.

This property would suit individuals, couples or groups. It is absolutely ideal for travelling academics or work groups.

Because of the stairs and surrounding river, and the fact that none of the studio apartments contain a bath, I wouldn’t recommend this property to a family with very young children.

The small bathrooms and stairs wouldn’t suit an individual who is mobility impaired.

The owners of Folly Bridge House are absolutely lovely, welcoming and helpful. They don’t live on the premises but are within easy reach on the other end of the phone.

Such a pretty exterior with the crenellations, patterned red brick and grey/blue accents.

Disclosure: This accommodation is owned by a member of our extended family and was gifted to us. The review is my own opinion and I was under no obligation to write it.
